Old Montreal, with an area of one square km, welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. The history of Montreal is extensive, dating back to origin of the name Mont Royal in 1535 by Jacques Cartier.
You can literally follow in the footsteps of history in Old Montréal. The granite paving stones throughout the streets, sidewalks and public spaces of Old Montréal mark the buried remains of the 18th-century fortified city’s stone walls and main sites.
The city of Montreal is known for its historical buildings dating back hundreds of years. In 2003, Montreal began discussions on adoption of a heritage policy. Montréal, which last year hosted the 8th World Conference of Historical Cities, at which the Montréal Declaration was adopted, will be one of the first large cities to adopt a heritage policy. This policy will help preserve the heritage and history of Old Montreal.
