Portland is the largest city in the state of Maine. It welcomes over 3.6 million tourists a year. The city was just ranked the number one place to raise children. The greater Portland area is approximately one quarter of the total population. The population of greater Portland is 64,000 and the metro population is 230,000.

Portland is known for its historical architecture. When visiting the business, financial and retail capital state walk along the working waterfront or the cobblestone streets of the renovated old port. In 1990, a historic preservation law was created to preserve Portland’s beautiful heritage and legacy. Currently there are 1,500 properties protected under this ordinance. The City’s Historical Preservation Committee with the Planning Development Staff is the one’s responsible for protecting and identifying the City’s architectural properties and landscapes.
